🙌✨ We made it! 🎉🙌
Was it a successful launch? Are you rich now??
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by to read another Triple Eye newsletter. As always, it's Lucas at the keeb (and I'm grateful to have you here with me)!
The short answers to your questions: Yes! No! Thanks for reading, bye!
And the long answer?
The longer answer: financial success was always a long-shot, and from the beginning the goal was more about making the games than selling them.
I was putting off writing this newsletter because it's hard to admit defeat: I made mistakes in the marketing and promotion of these games (mistakes which a professional would have known how to avoid!) which led to us making three games that are exactly what I wanted – and no one knows about them. While I'm very happy about the results, it's bittersweet to say things could have gone better.
Since we've not earned the kind of money necessary to keep the team making Null State games full-time, we're going to switch to a different schedule/cadence which will (over the next 2-3 years) provide some short-term contracts to several new writers, giving them an outlet to tell some shorter stories in Null State (& One Last Job!). We'll be able to add more stories like this thanks to the hard work for the Triple Eye team (especially Billy & Robin), who made our game systems modular enough that adding new storylines and plot points is just a matter of dropping the right text files into the right folders, and releasing a patch.
Very cool!
So... What's next?
Broadly, the plan is to keep adding stories on top of the tech we have (and fixing any bugs we run across while doing so).
In the release version of Null State, we see major storylines that involve 6 of the 12 verticals (Esoteric Esthetics, Wizards KBS, Riverside Temple, Plenn P&P, and even inDS) – I've got a AAA Cleaning & Lawn storyline that I want someone to put some polish on; I suspect Stonefield Legal Holdings could do with a bit of investigation; and I'm also curious to put Deepworks in front of someone, to see what they can dig up. 🥁
I know a few people who I would love to have sit down and write up a little non-Sid Null State story, and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to get some of their time in the near future!
Additionally, I really want to bring the games to MacOS / iOS. For what it's worth, I don't have a GOOD reason for wanting to do this; there's just a couple folks I want to play these games and they don't have Steam... so... we'll bring the games to them!
With that said, I don't think Triple Eye will release any new games on Steam in the next year or two – Null State games are what I'll continue to work on and support (until I'm tired of them), in addition to production consulting, for a while longer.
Anyway, isn't three a really good number!?
Outro
Thanks for following along on our journey so far!
I hope it's been enjoyable to follow along as we made these games. I will drop you a line every so often, letting you know what's going on in Triple Eye land – in addition to the new storylines coming, I've also got some game-adjacent research projects I'll be working on and sharing here... and that should be interesting!
